How To Know The True Speed Of Your Internet Connection

June 29, 2021 by Christina Leave a Comment

In today’s globalized world, having a slow internet connection is like having nothing. It will always be tedious to watch a video in half while waiting for it to load slowly, paused and seeing how the buffering is almost zero.

Now, that is just one of the simplest tasks today of anyone who needs a permanent connection to the network. If you are working from home, you should consider checking your email, the files sent through WhatsApp, the videos or photos that arrive through WeTransfer and the downloads to be made of said information. To this must be added the virtual classes for children (if you have children) or the work of your partner, who also requires the same services to fulfill their professional tasks.

This is why it is important to have an optimal internet signal: the more connected devices, the more effort your connection will make and the greater the parts in which your bandwidth will have to be divided.

How to see the internet connection?

To begin to solve the problem of slow internet in your home, the first thing to know is the true speed that your connection is registering at that moment.

How To Know The True Speed Of Your Internet Connection

For this, you just have to run one of the many speed tests offered by various sites on the web. Some of the best services are those from Speedtest.net, Fast.com, or CloudFlare.

You could also download and install an application, although this would be an unnecessary task considering that a reliable result can be obtained from the browser.

It is recommended that you run the test, whatever it is, several times to obtain an average speed and not just rely on the first test you perform. Remember that this will take no more than a minute per attempt, so keeping track of multiple tests is not a waste of time; on the contrary, it is a way to reach a solution faster.

What is the best internet connection for your home?

Knowing the true speed of your internet, you will be able to distinguish if what you have is enough for the computers that are connected, or on the contrary it falls short so that the connection runs optimally in each of them.

In the case of the former, it is best to check details such as the age of the modem or request a specialized technical service from your internet provider. If it is the latter, the ideal is to hire a service with more megabytes that guarantees greater speed in your home.

To know this information, the Federal Communications Commission of the United States (FCC for its acronym in English), discriminated the necessary internet connection in three cases: basic, medium and advanced.

Basic service (Download from 3 to 8 megabytes per second (Mbps))

The basic service is recommended for people who require light use of the internet such as normal browsing, checking e-mail or a video call; but in most cases never all at once.

Medium service (12 to 25 Mbps)

This second step is suitable for up to three devices connected at the same time with a use that oscillates between medium and high.

Advanced service (26 Mbps or higher)

Finally, the advanced internet connection is recommended if there will be four or more devices in the home that will require the service at the same time and for tasks of medium or higher use.
